— ZIP'S COMPETITION BBQ TEAM —
Zip's competition BBQ team started in 2015 as "Smoke 'em if you got 'em". The team was founded by Pit Masters Waylon Weatherford and Frank May. Smoke 'em if you got 'em performed in backyard contests throughout Georgia and Tennessee over the next 3 and a half years. Late in the 2018 season Jason Spielvogel was brought on as a 3rd team member and the group officially changed names to Zip's BBQ. The name Zip's stems from Pit Master Frank May's childhood nickname and since Frank is the chef behind our fabulous BBQ sauces we all agreed to make the change.

Frank May - I received my first smoker when I was 19 in 2003 as a birthday gift and immediately started honing my craft. Family get togethers (of 30 to 75 people) became my proving ground, smoking whole hams, pork butts, pork loins, and ribs. More and more my services were being requested and I was happy to oblige! I began working on my sauce recipe at that time as well. While tailgating one beautiful Saturday in Athens, Waylon and I began talking BBQ and decided to try and cook competitively. We entered our first KCBS sanctioned contest in August of 2015 and received our first call for ribs in that first time out. 10th place in ribs in a field of 30 teams on our first event was super exciting and I was hooked to say the least! After 16 years of perfecting, my sauce is on point and winning awards and Zip's BBQ is on top in the GBC! Party on!
